Matt ‘The Stinger’ Spratt took the Race 3 win and the round at the final round of the PORTERGROUP V8 Ute championship at Hampton Downs, but the weekend was all about the drama of the title fight and it was Richard ‘Danger’ Moore who completed a season-long comeback with the championship title.

Starting off second, Moore played a cautious game and tracked Spratt throughout in the soaking wet conditions. He needed only to finish in reality, following the 35 point shift in his favour in the title following Paul Manuell’s DNF in the morning’s race, and he duly delivered with a composed drive to second. Try as he might, and he did try with pretty much all of the race’s passing manoeuvres, Manuell could do nothing to recoup the damage done in the morning.
In a race started under the Safety Car, Andrew ‘Hireman’ Porter once again excelled, showing great prowess in the wet to drive through the field to third. Brett ‘The Scud’ Rudd, in his final race in the category in the LOSCAM Holden run by Pallet Supplies Racing, came home a solid third ahead of Jamie ‘Slenderman’ Gaskin, who had one of his best races of his V8 ute racing career so far. Geoff ‘SOS’ Spencer brought the Coresteel Buildings Holden home in sixth, and Paul Manuell came home an impressive seventh, though for the outgoing champ there was further insult to injury with an enquiry into a potential jumped start.
"Really it’s been a huge team effort and extremely satisfying to get home with the title," said the new champ Moore after securing his first NZ circuit racing title outside of karts. "That first weekend at Pukekohe was tremendously difficult for us. The hit we had into the wall was massive and the effort everyone put in to even have the car running the next day was immense. Since then we’ve been clawing back and in the most recent rounds have really tried to pile on the pressure with race wins. The pressure has certainly been on all of us, but for sure it’s absolutely great to win it."
